Website ceimaine CEI, Inc.

Building an economy that lifts all people

The CEI summer internship experience offers a unique opportunity to learn about the Community Development Financial Industry and to gain real, practical knowledge and understanding of CEI and our mission to create economically and environmentally healthy communities in which all people, especially those with low incomes, can reach their full potential.

This summer, we are seeking an intern to work with our Lending and Investment team. This will be a paid, 10 week internship lasting approximately from mid-June to early August. The ideal candidate for this internship is a student who has a connection to BIPOC, immigrant and/or people in LGBTQ+ communities, with an interest in community development and empowerment, finance, and racial justice.

Who we are:

Headquartered in Maine, CEI is a community development finance institution that is a national leader in rural economic and business development. CEI’s mission is to help grow good jobs, environmentally sustainable enterprises, and shared prosperity in Maine and in rural regions across the country by integrating financing, business and industry expertise, and policy solutions.

Over 70 percent of our financing and advice goes to businesses that are expanding opportunities for low-income communities, communities of color, and others who have been left behind by our economy.

What we believe:

  • We believe that an engaging and supportive work environment advances our mission.
  • We believe in utilizing the many varied talents of our staff and in providing continual opportunities for development.
  • We believe in open communication, innovation, integrity, and autonomy.
  • We believe in equity and strive to create a culture where diverse people feel a sense of ownership and belonging, where they can be their authentic self.
  • We believe in generosity, life balance and trust.

Internship Purpose:

The CEI internship experience is designed to meet four core learning outcomes:
1. Acquire new knowledge in a setting that is related to the concepts, principles, and methodologies applied in the classroom, thus allowing the student to connect theory with practice;
2. Enhance and develop written and verbal communication skills;
3. Provide the opportunity to collaborate with diverse people and in a formal business setting;
4. Develop career awareness, self-direction, and self-confidence.

What you’ll be doing:

  • This 10 week project would be to assess and integrate the learnings/feedback from the pilot of the African American Equity Impact Scorecard, combined with peer research and impact tool evaluation, into relevant DEI-related areas at CEI (including, but not limited to, our lending policies and procedures as they are revised for FY23).
  • Develop recommendations/strategy for how the AAEIS scorecard questions fit into the Good Jobs scorecard and propose updates to CEI’s mission matrix, especially around the Shared Prosperity pillar. Project is mission impact forward (rather than technical).
  • The AAEIS work would be the core focus of the internship, but there would be the opportunity to provide general support to lending’s DEI working group and assist with various projects (FAQ doc for the website, code of ethics for third party consultants, etc.).

Learning outcomes:

The work done over the internship to establish recommendations for a more equitable underwriting practice will directly impact the lending team’s procedures and how we evaluate and (potentially) price deals – the hope is to develop an actively anti-racist ethos for lending. This work could also affect other areas of CEI, like our impact metrics and Good Jobs Scorecard, as we seek to evaluate how we measure and assess deal value and community impact.

Skills/Education/ Experience:

  • Current undergraduate student – preferably in Maine but open to students outside of Maine if the right fit/interest.
  • Students who have a connection to BIPOC, immigrant and/or people in LGBTQ+ communities.
  • An interest community development and empowerment, finance, and racial justice.
  • Familiarity with DEI and racial equity principles.
  • Receptiveness to conversations about race and equity that can be complex and difficult.
  • Professional and courteous.
  • Strong active listening skills
  • Strong technical skills – Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, etc.
  • Ability to quickly learn and understand new material/concepts.
  • Strong communication skills – both written and verbal.
  • Curious, critical thinker.
