The Senior Accountant will work with Director of Accounting and the accounting team and other managers to provide accounting, analysis and regulatory support for various programs to meet fund reporting requirements. The role provides leadership and guidance to the accounting staff.

The role is based out of our Brunswick, Maine headquarters. Presently all CEI staff are working remotely so reliable home wi-fi is essential for the role. CEI continues to monitor the COVID-19 crisis and is developing a return to the office policy for September of 2021. The policy will be in compliance with federal and state CDC guidelines and with a specific plan in place that ensures the safety of our staff and clients.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Works with Director of Accounting to coordinate and integrate timely, reconciled and accurate financial statements, reporting and analysis for CEI and subsidiaries, including oversight of program and loan fund accounting and reporting, budgets and variance analysis.
Assists with budget development, as well as monitoring results to ensure budgetary variance analysis and compliance with applicable regulations and policies.
Oversees appropriate charging against program and intercompany budgets.
Works with Director of Accounting and others to respond to questions from funders, employees, census bureau surveys, and management as needed.
Prepares or reviews balance sheet general ledger accounts to ensure proper monthly reporting.
Provides support as required for all audits, financial and regulatory.
Monitors daily cash activity, prepares cash reports, and performs online banking tasks.
Provides guidance, training and advice to accounting staff as needed.
Acts as a backup to the Fund Accountant and other staff as needed

Qualifications and Skills: Qualified candidates will have a passion for accounting and compliance. This includes a critical attention to detail and accuracy coupled with the ability to work independently and prioritize workload to ensure accurate and timely delivery of work. Additionally, to be successful in this role the individual must have strong analytic and problem-solving skills. They will have the proven ability to work collaboratively within teams and cross-departmentally; demonstrating competency and establishing trust.

Qualified candidates will have a bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field and 5+ years of relevant experience – nonprofit or fund/grant accounting experience strongly preferred. Candidates must have experience with budget preparation and control, compliance, management and financial reporting in a diversified organization. Strong technical abilities using MS office systems, including high proficiency in Excel, Word and accounting software.
