Position Overview________________________
The Metalsmithing & Jewelry Studio Technician is responsible for maintaining the studio and the equipment within the metalsmithing and jewelry program as well as assisting students with the technical issues that may arise. The overarching responsibility is to ensure the studio is a safe environment that fosters the best possible learning and teaching experience for students and faculty. The successful candidate will gain unlimited access to MECA&D’s jewelry and metalsmithing facilities and a dedicated bench space. The Successful Candidate___________________

To achieve success in the role of Metalsmithing and Jewelry Studio Technician, it will require:

Maintenance of studio facility, tools and equipment, including keeping the space clean and well organized;
Assisting in the safe and healthy operation of the studio, including working with students to ensure health and safety regulations are upheld and equipment is used properly;
Ordering supplies, taking inventory of materials, replenishing supplies and keeping accurate records;
Monitoring use of the Metals Studio as needed;
Coordinating with the Continuing Studies program to ensure faculty needs are met;
Assisting faculty in departmental projects and improvements, as directed by the Program Chair;
Assisting in and/or completing special projects, such as planning field trips, researching new equipment, building worktables, and/or developing new processes for the studio;
In conjunction with the Chair, supervising the part time work study student.

Qualifications, Experience, Abilities___________

A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience is required.


3+ years of related work experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to implement and uphold best practices as it relates to metalsmithing and jewelry techniques required.

Skills and Abilities:

Reliability and being self motivated are required;
Ability to work both as an independent contributor as well as part of a team while being committed to contributing to a positive learning environment for all students and faculty required;
Skill and a sense of comfort with power tools such as the drill press, table saw, band saw, and grinders is important;
Basic carpentry skills are required;

Maine College of Art & Design is an independent college of art and design located in the center of the thriving arts district of Portland, Maine. Established in 1882, the College currently enrolls approximately 550 students, the majority of whom are in the undergraduate program. About 1,000 students take classes through MECA&D’s Continuing Studies Program annually. 4. Create a Living and Learning Center

Charge: MECA&D will develop a new Living and Learning Center that reflects the College’s mission to provide students with the resources and support necessary to pursue their education successfully. Building on MECA&D’s historic role as the creative anchor of Portland, the new Center will expand MECA&D’s footprint and identity within Portland and will provide a destination and hub for community activity and engagement.

5. Financial Sustainability

Charge: An essential principle of our Strategic Plan is to ensure MECA&D’s long-term financial sustainability. As informed by data and other qualitative metrics, we will identify a financial framework and a series of revenue-focused strategic priorities in support of sustainable results and MECA&D’s overall fiscal plan.

Compensation & Benefits___________________
This is a year round non exempt part time position, offering 25 hours per week during the academic year and 20 hours per week during the summer months.

Compensation: $16.00 to $18.00 per hour

Benefits: Eligible for participation in 403(b) plan with 5% match offered.  The position also offers unlimited access to MECA&D’s jewelry and metalsmithing facilities and a dedicated bench seat.
