Who We Are
The General Government Service Center (GGSC) is one of five financial service centers within the Department of Administrative and Financial Services established to provide centralized accounting and budgeting services to agencies across state government. GGSC customers include the Department of Administrative and Financial Services (including Information Technology, Real Estate, Purchases, Lottery, Alcohol and Marijuana), the Governor’s Office, the Department of Economic and Community Development, the Department of Education, various Boards and Commissions as well as the Cultural Agencies—a mix of government entities that adds variety to standard accounting practices. We offer the flexibility to work remote.
About the Position
We are looking for a Staff Accountant to manage the complex accounts within the Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations (BABLO) that contain multiple funding sources and cost centers. This position is responsible for processing accounts payable and accounts receivable, preparing monthly journals including prize reserve, monthly profit transfer and bond payment. This position will also assume responsibility for monthly reconciliations of subsidiary ledgers.
Challenging aspects of the work including analyzing and resolving nonstandard accounting transactions to initiate appropriate corrections to accounting records. The customer service component of the Staff Accountant position involves building relationships with BABLO program staff to explain accounting policies and procedures and resolve accounting discrepancies. Work is performed under limited supervision. Successful candidates will ensure that accounts are managed in accordance with GAAP/GASB standards, state/agency accounting procedures and adhere to internal controls.
Successful candidates will have:
Demonstrated knowledge of accounting. Establish and oversee accounting procedures and internal controls for asset, liability, equity, revenue, and expense accounts to ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and operating procedures
Experience with analyzing source documents for accuracy and completeness to identify accounting system problems or weaknesses
Demonstrated experience with reconciling accounts, initiating corrective actions, formulating, and recommending system and process changes
Ability to communicate with financial and program staff to explain accounting policy and processes and resolve accounting discrepancies or disputes
Interpersonal communication and excellent customer service skills
Ability to prioritize for daily demands/deadlines including month-end
A willingness to learn and grow with a self-directed, positive attitude
The ability to listen, follow directions and work successfully both as part of a team and individually
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution in accounting -OR-
Any other bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution that includes at least 18 semester hours in accounting coursework -OR-
An associate degree from an accredited educational institution in accounting and 3 years of practical work experience providing complex technical support to professional accounting staff -OR-
6 years of practical work experience providing complex technical support to professional accounting staff.
Accounting coursework must include successful completion of Principles of Accounting I & II, Intermediate Accounting I & II, plus two other accounting-related courses.
Experience must demonstrate comprehension and application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) guidelines and must demonstrate the ability to (1) classify and analyze financial data and records for the purpose of business financial planning; (2) design, recommend, and implement modifications of accounting methods, procedures, forms, and records; (3) prepare financial statements and reports such as balance sheets and other operating statements; and (4) analyze accounts and accounting relationships that result in complex accounting entries.
