General Summary
The Senior Vice President, Resource Development mobilizes our community’s collective resources to drive community impact. They lead a team of dedicated professionals focused on community engagement, with an emphasis on growing revenue from a variety of sources, including businesses, individuals, and foundations. This role is responsible for creating, planning, and implementing annual and multi-year strategies that will increase United Way of Southern Maine (UWSM)’s revenue. Through focused and inspirational leadership, this role is responsible for developing and maintaining a culture of growth: growth in our impact, revenue, and staff and volunteer leadership through managing, mentoring, supporting, and coaching. In addition, they must develop a long-term vision that will inspire staff, lead volunteers and donors, and yield excellent resource development results.
The SVP is responsible for the management of an eleven-member Resource Development team.
Success in this position will be demonstrated by the ability of the SVP to increase UWSM’s fundraising results from the annual workplace campaigns, corporate gifts, and sponsorships, major gifts, non-workplace giving, and planned giving. Growing revenue through major giving and UWSM’s giving circles (Brick & Beam Society and Women United) is an area of strategic focus. All fundraising efforts are directed in support of UWSM’s mission: “To improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of our communities,” and in support of UWSM’s strategic plan to advance the Thrive2027 community goals. The SVP will represent UWSM in the community by attending events and, where appropriate, by serving in leadership roles in order to expand United Way’s presence throughout our community. The appropriate candidate must have the ability to lead UWSM’s strategic community engagement efforts as it enters a bold new phase of organizational growth. It will require superb communications skills, exceptional strategic and operational abilities, a proven track record in fundraising, and strong planning, organizational development, and analytical skills.
Essential Functions
Develop and Supervise Execution of Fundraising Plans (30%):
Lead the design, management, and implementation of multi-year plans to increase financial support for UWSM through workplace campaigns, individual contributions, corporate and foundation support, planned giving, sponsorships, affinity groups, and other new business opportunities. This includes supporting staff in other departments who are responsible for aspects of the organization’s fundraising.
Lead staff and volunteers to implement strategies and action steps to achieve or exceed revenue goals.
Recruit, cultivate, manage, and staff a volunteer Resource Development Council (development committee), and work in partnership with Resource Development staff to do the same for their areas of leadership.
Use systems and coach others to effectively monitor, track, and analyze revenue generation and provide accurate projections against goals.
Develop and lead a planned giving program to contribute to UWSM’s long-term financial success.
Assess the execution of plans and overall fundraising opportunity and adjust resources as needed.
Anticipate changes in economic and philanthropic trends to maximize opportunities.
Manage and Develop the Resource Development team (30%):
Nurture a culture of excellence, results, collaboration, and growth.
Coach, develop, and manage a high-performance team, including supervision of the Director of Corporate Engagement, the Director of Volunteer Engagement, and the Director, Major Giving, and their staff.
Ensure staff is accountable for results and achievement of written business plan objectives for themselves and their direct reports.
Ensure team has the leadership and staff skills, tools, resources, and training to be successful.
Lead Additional Operational Area (15%):
The current SVP leads organizational Governance, including supporting the Board’s Governance committee. Depending on background and skill set of the new SVP, the SVP will lead another operational area of the organization to be determined post-hire.
Other (25%):
Serve on the Senior Leadership Team of UWSM, participating in all major organizational decisions.
Serve on the Senior Directors Team of UWSM, helping shape and guide organizational culture.
Serve on the Strategic Planning Team of UWSM, helping develop and steward current and future strategic plans.
Collaborate with senior staff across departments to maintain a culture of teamwork that ensures long-term organizational and community success.
Demonstrate strong external community involvement.
Volunteer and actively participate in organizational projects, special events, cross-functional teams, or workgroups that support the work of the entire organization.
Champion exceptional service both internally and externally.
Remain current on nonprofit fundraising trends and best practices through peer association, seminar attendance, study, review of literature, and by engaging with the global United Way network.
Remain current with Southern Maine business community developments and trends.
Preferred Education
Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent required. MBA, JD, or other relevant graduate degree preferred. CFRE desirable.
Required Skills & Experience
A minimum of 7 years demonstrated nonprofit fundraising success as a staff member or volunteer, including planned giving with progressively increased accountability.
A minimum of 3 years of direct staff leadership experience, including managing a department or functional area and fostering effective working relationships across multiple functional areas.
Proven track record of achieving revenue goals.
Budget management experience—designing, managing, and accountable for UWSM’s annual fundraising revenue and Resource Development department budget.
Experience working with and managing high-profile, influential community volunteers.
Excellent interpersonal skills and significant relationship management experience with donors, clients, and/ or volunteers.
Superior analytical skills and facility with data, including analyzing and using data to provide strategic direction.
Excellent presentation, public speaking, written and oral communication skills.
Experience working directly with or volunteering in a leadership role for a mission-driven organization.
Demonstrated success analyzing complex issues and developing and implementing programs to address them.
Strong attention to detail and ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.
Technical aptitude and command of Constituent Relationship Management (CRM) databases.

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
A valid driver’s license, verifiable auto insurance, and personal vehicle use are required.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This position regularly requires long hours and weekend work. At UWSM, we are focused on creating connections within the Southern Maine community. Our current hybrid model is focused on doing just that, requiring our team members to spend at least 16 hours per week creating connections. Examples of creating connections include office time, external meetings/gatherings, training, volunteer engagement events, and even a cup of coffee with an internal/external partner. Due to the nature of this role, the SVP can expect to engage with our community more than this minimal requirement. They can expect frequent early morning, evening, and occasional weekend events.
Travel
Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
